Short answer: Pick a plumbing company with an active Utah DOPL license, ask how they price the job before they start, and get the quote and warranty in writing.

1. Check the license
Utah's plumbing contractor classifications are P200 General Plumbing and P201 Residential Plumbing (Utah DOPL), and DOPL's chart notes both require a master plumber (DOPL classification chart). Search the company in DOPL's license lookup.
2. Ask these questions
- Is there a trip or diagnostic fee?
- Flat rate or hourly? Is the price firm before work starts?
- Do you offer 24-hour emergency service, and what does it cost?
- What warranty covers parts and labor?
- Will you pull a permit if the job needs one (for example a water heater replacement)?
3. In an emergency
Know where your main water shutoff is before you need it. Turn it off, then call. Several companies on our list advertise 24-hour emergency lines on their own sites; their listings say so.
4. About costs
We only publish prices we can cite. Ask for the price in writing before work begins.
